Shake roofs
Shake roofs have long-standing traditions in the Nordic countries and Europe and are quite well known in North America. The most common, sturdiest local wood is usually used to build shake roofs and in Estonia this can be aspen – or larch and cedar in America.
Shingle roofs
Shingle roofs were first built in Estonia at the end of the 19th century, dating back to Alexander Martin Luther and Markel Makarov establishing a company that offered roof shingles as the most popular article of sale. This roof type was originally used in Finland.
Chip roofs
In Estonia, chips used to be the most common wooden roof material and this is why chip and splinter roofs are today found to be hiding under old asbestos cement roofing.
Board roofs
Historically, board roofs were most common in outbuildings of minor importance. Today, after the material has become popular again, all sorts of buildings, public housing included, are designed to have a board roof.
